How to make friends while traveling

Meeting new and interesting people on the road is half the fun of traveling. It is part of expanding your horizon and learning about new cultures, customs and ideas. Through meeting new people you will grow personally, be inspired and feel super cool, because now you have friends from all over the globe.

On top of feeling super cool, making friends on the road will also help you save a ton of money – think shared taxi rides, half the groceries for dinner and split room costs…you get my point.

But how do you make those cool friends in the first place? It’s pretty simple.

Here is my short guide on making friends when traveling on a shoestring

Be open and introduce yourself

If you are open and share who you are, others will do the same. For example, I introduced myself to a random guy in the kitchen of a backpacker in Chile, just to find out that he came to Chile by bicycle from New York. Yes, you read that right, New York in the USA. Holy smokes! I was mightily impressed, had a million questions at once and was super stoked that I introduced myself to a stranger rather than just getting that glass of water I came to get in the kitchen. You can follow Greg’s adventures on his blog.

Smile and make jokes about yourself

A simple smile gets you far. It is after all the most universal sign of a good mood and happiness.

What gets you even further are a few jokes about how stupid/fat/lost you are. I am not kidding, self depreciating jokes are a great ice breaker and helped me start a personal relationship with many people in South America. How can you not like somebody that always smiles and makes you laugh?

Remember names

This is a big one! Everyone likes to hear their own name, so remember peoples name and address them by their name often. To make sure you remember everyones name listen actively to each name right at the introduction, immediately think of somebody else you know with the same name and address that person by  name within the next minute. That way your chances of remembering a name are much better. If you realize that you forgot a name, immediately apologize and ask for their name again. Nothing says “I don’t care” more than asking for someones name after talking and hanging out for the last three days.

If all of that sounds a bit overwhelming or if you are just not that type of person who can simply turn the “social-me” switch on then start easy and approach single individuals. If they are traveling solo even better. Most solo travelers suffer from the “I-haven’t-talked-to-anyone-today” syndrome (believe me, I’ve been there) and are always happy to chat with another like-minded person.

To sum things up, introduce yourself, smile plenty and use peoples names. Those three things alone will get you going in no time. And before you know it you’ll be surrounded by great people when hiking the deepest canyon in the world, surfing the longest wave in the world or having mind blowing adventures in Morocco.

Oh and yes, traveling together with great people will save you money too!

Now it’s your turn, how do you usually meet new people when traveling?
