I’ve traveled to almost 40 different countries on a shoestring budget and also lived and worked in 5 of those countries for about a year each time. With all that time spent abroad, there’s only one country that truly has the full package. And by full package I mean: mystical culture, great food, world class surf, mind blowing adventures and great cities. So here you go, my five best adventures in Peru – the only country that has it all!
Oh and BTW this is the real shoestring life and not one of those time wasting “I received 5 nights for free in a deluxe resort from the office of tourism” paid blog posts that keep popping up like mushrooms after a rainy summer night.
Surfing the Longest Wave in the World
I’m a surfer to the very core and surfing a world class wave that runs for 4 kilometers gets me so excited I make every 5 year old waiting for Christmas presents look asleep. Where else do you find waves so long that you have to sit down on your board to rest your legs from 20 radical tricks, all while still surfing the same wave? It’s long, it’s fun and it completely changes your perception of a long ride.
Doing a Home-Stay at Lake Titicaca
Don’t run after all the tourists and jump on a boat to the islands on Lake Titicaca. Instead share a crowded bus with the locals and visit some of the remote villages north or south of Puno. You won’t see a single other tourist or hotel sign. Instead you will have to go to the main plaza in the village and start making friends to find a place in somebody’s home. Sounds difficult? Well, the most memorable experiences don’t happen in 5-star hotels, they happen in everyday life. So push yourself a bit and be part of centuries old family life. Believe me, running water is one of the biggest luxuries ever.
Feeling the Spirits in the Sacred Valley
The majority of tourists head straight from Cuzco to Machu Pichu and totally miss out on the mystical atmosphere of the Sacred Valley leading to Machu Pichu. I hiked the cliffs and crawled through caves high above Pisac for hours all by myself, surrounded by breathtaking vistas and ancient Inca ruins. In the next town of Oyantantombo I stayed in the amazing “Casa de Wow Backpackers” and went trout fishing in the mountain streams with the locals. Of course I didn’t catch anything. Shucks, I couldn’t even dig out a single worm and the fish didn’t seem to like the salami of my lunch sandwich. So, do yourself a favor and feed your soul in the sacred valley before you battle the hordes of tourists at Machu Pichu. It will juice up your Machu Pichu experience that much more.
Hiking up Wayna Pichu
Remember the scene in Avatar, when the clan climbs up to find the dragons high up in the floating mountains? Remember the vertical cliffs and sheer drops from your TV screen? Well, you better be prepared for a radical real life experience just like that when hiking up Wayna Pichu. When I hiked up to Wayna Pichu – which towers high above Machu Pichu – it was so foggy that day, I couldn’t see further than a few meters. When I looked over some of the edges it felt deep but because all I could see was white no adrenaline was pumping. Boy did that change when the fog cleared and I hiked down. Adrenaline pure! And gee, I couldn’t believe how close to a 2000 meter vertical drop I walked because of the thick fog. Hike Wayna Pichu and see how much of a Navi you’re really are.
Hiking the Colca Canyon
Hiking into the deepest canyon in the world to sleep under the stars and away from civilization as you know it is a must do when you are in Peru. And the best thing is, after hiking for 2 days with heavy backpacks you get to relax in an Oasis at the bottom of the canyon. But sweet Oasis life doesn’t last to long, since you get kicked out of bed at 4:30 the next morning to hike up 1000 height meters back up to the edge of the canyon. The ice cold drink back in civilization will taste super good!

Munching your Way Through the Market in Arequipa
Arequipa is beautiful, friendly and packed with great restaurants. Now that said, don’t pay tourist prices in all the fancy looking restaurants overlooking the main plaza.
