4 Tips to Surfing the Longest Wave in the World

World class waves come in many different flavors. Some taste like pure fear, others leave your tongue tingling with adrenaline, but very few are so long that your taste buds are overstimulated and give up.

If you’re looking for taste bud over-stimulation why not give the longest wave in the world a try?

Welcome to Chicama, Peru where a single wave runs for four kilometers, cramps your legs and redefines your understanding of a long ride.

Unless your legs can survive a five minute long squat or have more endurance than the legs of Lance Armstrong you will have to approach this wave with an unconventional style to make the most of your time.

Here’s my quick guide to surfing the longest wave in the world:

Time your paddle out

Chicama has a horrendous current that’s consistently pushing you away from the zone where you want to catch the waves. That’s why you should paddle to this zone from behind, so you can use the current to move you into the perfect position. If anyone is paddling out together with you, relax and let them go first. They’ll be gone down the point in a few minutes and you have the entire wave to yourself again. Once out there, take it easy while drifting until you see the perfect set wave come your way. Paddle hard and off you go on the longest ride of your life.

Sit down and take a time-out while surfing

How many turns, snaps and carves do you usually make on a single wave? More than 15 in a row? More than 25? Chicama is so long that you can easily make double that number. So take it easy while you’re on a wave and take a time-out when the section in front of you flattens out. How do you do that? Simply sit down on your board for half a minute and stretch your legs a bit. It will help them relax and prepare them for the next action-packed minute of cut backs and roundhouses. Remember, only Lance could stand upright for the whole ride.

Be quick if you wipe-out

If your legs actually do cramp up and cause you to fall – trust me it will happen more often than you think – be quick, get back up on your board and paddle fast. How fast? Envision a shark chasing you and you’ll be fast enough to bring yourself in position for the next wave in the set of waves your surfing. If you do this right, you’re up and surfing another endless wave in less than 10 seconds.

Take a slow walk back up the beach

Dude, you just surfed for miles down the bay! Your done on this run, so it’s time to briskly walk the 20 minutes (!) back up the beach to the beginning of the wave. And here comes the challenge for every surfer: watching perfect, empty waves peel endlessly right in front of you without starting to run like a pack of wolfs is chasing you. (What’s up with all those chasing animals!?)

I’m a dedicated surfer myself and I know how hard it is to stay calm at such an amazing sight, but if you go for a 10 minute sprint you won’t survive your next endless leg-cramping wave. Trust me, if you run you won’t last longer than two five minute turns in the water. And you didn’t come all this way to Peru only to surf 10 minutes, right? So do yourself a big favor and walk slowly.

Budget

Can you surf the longest wave in the world on a $25 daily budget? Absolutely! Pretty cheap hostels ($5 to 10 per night) with a great view are on the cliff overlooking the entire point.  Food and menus of the day are as cheap as $2 and fill you up plenty. So yes, you can spend a long time in Chicama and surf even longer waves.

To sum things up, time your paddle out well, sit down on your board to give your legs a break, get back up on your board quickly after you fall and, most importantly, walk back up the beach slowly.
