Top 5 ‘Underground’ Things to do in Cape Town

Written by Marco Morawec

Cape Town is one of the best cities in the world. I simple love the place with its combination of ocean, culture, mountains and nature.

Gee, I would even say it is THE best city in the world. And after calling Cape Town home in 2002/03 and being back way too many times I think it is time to share my Top 5 ‘Underground’ Things to do in Cape Town. And best of all, most of them are free.

Here we go…

Hiking Lion’s Head before Sunrise

All the tourists go for sunset joined by a few locals. But all the cool people start hiking up in the darkness to greet the first rays of light from the top of Lion’s Head. If you actually make it out of bed that early you’ll have the peak pretty much for yourself and you stand on top of the world, right when a new day begins. Nothing can beat that early morning sunrise feeling, don’t you think? Just watch out when you hike back down that you don’t twist your ankle like I did and end up limping around for two weeks – no fun!

Cost: Free!

Rock Climbing Silvermine National Park

I am a firm believer that if you want to grow as a person you have to push your own limits. I always have the need to experience my own boundaries and see how far I can push. One way that I make sure to push my own limits is to climb up a 20 meter vertical rock wall overlooking beautiful False Bay and Muizenberg. Pumping heartbeat, 15 Meters high on a tiny ledge with only your fingertips holding onto a crack in the rock. That’s my idea of a good time and a surefire way of completely living in the now and here. After all, who can think about their next Blog Post when hanging on to dear life. I can’t!

Cost: $3 park fee and your climbing gear (get in touch with a University of Cape Town rock climbing club and they’ll take you along).

Going for a Braai (BBQ) in the Township

Do you love to BBQ? Do you love to party? Forget partying in Long-Street for a moment and go where it is really happening. Go to Mzolis in the Guguletu Township and party it up. Bring your own beer and buy a huge pile of meat, chicken and ribs that feeds six people for under $25 dollars and dance to the cool music blaring out of the huge loudspeakers. Make sure to come before noon to avoid the heavy crowds and hand the guy BBQ-ing your meat an extra dollar to jump the line and get your meat back immediately (I had no idea how the bribing-for-faster-meat-return works, but luckily my Captonian buddy had no trouble at all negotiating the chaos in the five kitchens). After you’ve got your meat sit down, eat, drink, dance and check out all the people around you. It’s an awesome experience.

Cost: $5 for an insane amount of meat, $3 for a huge bottle of beer and $1 to bribe the BBQ Chef. All the party action is free!

Wine Tasting in Constantia

Yes, the Stellenbosch Wineries are awesome and worth a visit. But, hey, there’s no need to drive all the way over to Stellenbosch when you have something awesome around the corner. You can simply drive the 15 minutes to Constantia and get an excellent 6 glass wine tasting close to town. Even better, it’s completely free, the service is excellent and the amenities make you feel like you’re in a five star hotel. Just what I need after another week in a 10-bed dorm room.

Cost: Free!

Surfing with the Pros in Llandudno

Want a white beach in a lovely community, close to town and great waves? Head to Llandudno, bring your favorite beach towel, surfboard and a something to eat for hanging out at the beach after your done surfing (there are no shops there at all). Yes, Camps Bay is great and cool, but the food is overpriced and the waves suck. So, give Llandudno a try and get the tube of your life. Or in my case, a big fat wipe-out!

Cost: Free! (bring your wetsuit. The water is pretty cold!)

There you have it, my Top 5 Underground things to do in Cape Town.

Now, what are your favorite things to do in Cape Town?

Thanks for your comment Christian! Yes, that BBQ (or Braai as the say in Cape Town) was absolute delicious. But the real adventure was the whole process of buying the raw meat, bringing it into the kitchen, picking it up and dancing with all the locals in the Township…the BBQ was kind of the great food at an awesome party.
