Long term Traveling may seem like it will set you free and all day to day worries are out the window. Wrong. Think again.
Yes, you will feel free and at ease with a lot of things that occupied your mind during your life in an office. But at the same time your mind is now filled with a more grounded approach to life. Your buzz will feel like: is there a bus connection, is this the right bus I am on, where is this hostel, I’m in the wrong neighborhood and it is almost dark- yikes, am I paying too much for this room, I need a hospital bad and all I see is sand dunes – shucks! And on and on it goes.
There are exhilarating times and times you’ll feel down and over everything. Just like regular life there are ups and downs. But while a lot of us strive to control life as much as possible and keep the ups and downs as evenly as possible – or even try (and most likely fail) to skew life towards ups exclusivity – life on the road will rip any of that control out of your hands in no time. Ups are higher than you ever thought possible, while at the same time your lows will feel like devastating blows.
The trick is (as in regular home based life) to enjoy both sides of life on the road. Enjoy ups and downs!
How do you do that. Simple: follow your passion and let your inner drive do the rest.
The trick to long term travel is to do it for the right reasons to begin with. Travel for what you are passionate about and everything else will fall into place.
To figure out what you are passionate about just ask yourself: if I die tomorrow, am I doing what I really want to do today?
If you can answer with a simple yes, then you are truly following your passion. If you are not sure, you might waste your most precious resource that you have in life: time.
To put this into perspective, I hit rock bottom on the road in a beautiful city when I woke up in the middle of the night, itching all over, and realizing that another bed bug army attacked me in the same week. The attack was followed by another allergic reaction, a visit to the emergency room and a hefty medical bill.
My spirits were down and I was over the whole travel experience. I did not want to be in this city anymore, look at art or eat great food. Going home sounded great, but I knew it wasn’t an option. So I decided to follow my passion and jump on the next bus to find world class surf. Arriving in a tiny village seeing the ocean, blue sky and beautiful waves lifted my spirits to heights I did not think possible just a few days ago when lying again in the emergency room.
At that moment I realized that if I follow one of my passions no bump in the road can pull me down and I can answer “yes, I do what I want to do on my last day on earth”.
