Underground Adventures in Jerusalem

I’m an adventure boy and when I spend too much time in any city looking at churches, monuments and art pieces I get this strange feeling that I need to have an adrenaline rush. When that time comes I can either ignore my feelings – which in turn makes me no fun to be around – or I can run around in circles until I fall over. What can I say, all little boys like me need to run around to stay sane.

And yes, that happens to me even in a mind-boggling city like Jerusalem.

So, when I heard that I can crawl my way through a 2000 year old underground water canal below the ancient City of David I was all game.

I didn’t care that I had to wade through thigh deep water, crawl through claustrophobically narrow passageways, use my own flashlight as the only light source and was all by myself. All of that made the whole tunnel adventure even more exciting.

The spooky part of the whole adventure was actually trying to feel your way along the wall with my flashlight switched off. Off course I had to try that! But I think the longest I lasted in the pitch black, deep underground was 2 minutes though. Any longer and a little horror movie reel started playing in my mind and I started to hear imaginary footsteps right behind me. Way to scary!

Man, after playing my little flashlight-off-and-on-game for way too long I was stoked to see the light at the end of the tunnel and be greeted by two local boys. Daylight I’m yours again.

And what’s even better, the whole adventure was super friendly on my traveling budget and cost me less then $8. Make sure to bring your own flashlight and an extra pair of shoes and pants (the water is deep at times) to avoid renting or buying stuff at the entrance.

Now it’s your turn. I would love to hear your tricks and tips on how you keep the adrenaline pumping during any city trip?
