Spreading good Karma when traveling on a shoestring

I believe in what goes around comes around. And I’m a strong believer in Karma. And because I believe in Karma I try to be as helpful, assisting and generous as I can possibly be when on the road. Why am I doing that? Simply put, because I am always in need of help, orientation, shelter or a answer to a simple question when I travel. So – at least this is my hope – when helping others I feel my cosmic likelihood of receiving help myself is increased by an order of magnitude (gee, what a sentence!).

So if you are with me and believe in Karma as well have a look at my best ways to fill up your Karma account when backpacking and traveling the road on a shoestring.

Help a lost backpacker in the street

See that guy over there with the big backpack and sweat pearls on his forehead from walking in the hot afternoon sun for the last hour trying to find his hostel. He’s probably just like me and hopelessly lost. Why not spend five minutes of your time, walk over and talk to the guy with the big backpack. If he’s anything like me, then all he needs are a few obvious pointers ad he’s well on his way in finding the place he needs to be. And you, you just scored some simple Karma points and feel good about helping somebody.

Help a late arrival at your hostel

Flight delayed, missed the bus and heavily jet-lagged. You are all tired, hungry and stressed out. When you arrive and on top of that the reception is closed. If you see a guy like that, why don’t you offer a few welcoming words, maybe throw in a quick orientation of where to sleep, shower and eat. Trust me, your help will go along way and mean a lot to the new guy.

Remember and use peoples names

Even though you might not want to admit it to yourself, you love hearing your own name. I gave up pretending, and fully know that if somebody uses my name when talking to me I instantly feel better. That’s the same with everyone else around you and a great way with meeting people while traveling on a shoestring.

Think about it, all the travelers in a hostel might not have seen their families and friends (who know and use their name) in a long time and ever since they are on the road they are addressed as “Dude” “Amigo” or “My Friend”. Do those guys a favor, use their name and spread some good vibes.

Share a few things in the Kitchen

Have a whole bunch of tea, some extra parsley or a bit of extra chocolate (OK, some might argue that there is not such a thing as extra chocolate)? Why not do a shoutout in the middle of the communal kitchen and offer a cup of tea, coffe or chocolate to everyone. Do me a favor and just give it a try. You’ll see how the whole mood, feeling and atmosphere in any place can change by something as simple as sharing a few bags of tea. On top of that you might get a chance to meet a whole bunch of new and exciting people.

So there your have it. Follow those four simple steps and your Karma account should be full enough to get some help the next time you are lost late at night in the middle of nowhere. And if the help does not turn up? Hey, at least you know that the universe turned completely on you!

Now it’s your turn, how do you fill up your Karma account?
